Why is a field not displayed conditionally?

Fix conditional fields by checking the target field's logic toggle, source field ID, operator, comparison value, saved rule, and frontend behavior.

If a field does not appear when a visitor changes an answer, check the target field’s conditional settings, the source field ID, and the value being compared. Smart Form Builder evaluates conditions in the browser as visitors change form inputs and also checks conditional fields during submission processing.

1. Confirm conditional logic is enabled

  1. Edit the form and select the field that should appear or hide.
  2. Open that field’s settings and confirm Enable Logic is turned on.
  3. Check the configured action: show the field when the condition matches, or hide it when the condition matches. Make sure this is the behavior you intended.

2. Check the source field, operator, and value

  • Choose the correct Condition Field ID—the field whose answer controls the target field. A condition pointing to the target field itself or to a field that is not in the form cannot evaluate as expected.
  • Confirm the comparison operator, such as equal, not_equal, contains, or not_contains, matches the type of answer.
  • Compare the condition value with the actual option value, not just the label shown to visitors. Remove accidental spaces and check capitalization or punctuation.
  • For numeric conditions such as greater than or less than, use a field that produces a numeric value and enter a valid comparison number.

3. Test the condition on the public form

  • Save the form and open the page where it is published.
  • Choose an answer that should make the target field appear, then change it to an answer that should hide the field. Repeat with each condition branch.
  • Check the same form at the relevant step if it uses multiple steps. Confirm that the controlling field is present and can be changed before the target field is expected to appear.
  • If the field remains hidden, check the browser Console for JavaScript errors and verify the page loaded the current form scripts rather than a stale cached copy.

4. Check the saved condition

Review Configure Conditional Field Logic for the complete setup process. The saved rule includes the controlling field ID, operator, comparison value, and show/hide action. If the browser display and the saved rule differ, reopen the editor, verify the rule, save it, and test again.

A field hidden by a condition may be excluded from submission processing when the condition does not match. Do not use a hidden field to collect a value that must always be submitted.
